Build space from what you can see
Choose following space, mirror scans, and signals that give a large vehicle time to respond.
Rule to rememberLook well ahead, scan mirrors often, leave time by vehicle length and speed, and signal early through the full maneuver.
Protect the space ahead
Below 40 mph, allow at least one second for each 10 feet of vehicle length. Above 40 mph, add one second. Add more for poor conditions.
Scan hidden areas
Mirrors reduce blind areas but do not remove them. Check traffic, vehicle position, and changing hazards before and during a maneuver.
Communicate early
Signal well before turning, changing lanes, slowing, or stopping. Keep a turn signal on until the turn is complete.
